A Fluid-Limit Model Criterion for Instability of Multiclass Queueing Networks

چکیده
This paper studies the instability of multiclass queueing networks. We prove that if a uid limit model of the queueing network is weakly unstable, then the queueing network is unstable in the sense that the total number of customers in the queueing network diverges to innnity with probability one as time t ! 1. Our result provides a converse to a recent result of Dai 2] which states that a queueing network is positive Harris recurrent if a corresponding uid limit model is stable. Examples are provided to illustrate the usage of the result.

Sequencing and Routing in Multiclass Queueing Networks Part I: Feedback Regulation
This paper establishes new criteria for stability and for instability of multiclass network models under a given stationary policy. It also extends previous results on the approximation of the solution to the average cost optimality equations through an associated fluid model: It is shown that an optimized network possesses a fluid limit model which is itself optimal with respect to a total cos...
متن کاملStabilizing Queueing Networks with Setups
For multiclass queueing networks, dispatch policies govern the assignment of servers to the jobs they process. Production policies perform the analogous task for queueing networks whose servers are subject to switch-over delays or setups, a model we refer to as setup networks. It is well known that a poorly chosen dispatch policy may lead to instability of a multiclass queueing network, even wh...

We develop the use of piecewise linear test functions for the analysis of sta bility of multiclass queueing networks and their associated uid limit models It is found that if an associated LP admits a positive solution then a Lyapunov function exists This implies that the uid limit model is stable and hence that the network model is positive Harris recurrent with a nite polynomial moment Also i...
متن کاملOn Positive Harris Recurrence of Multiclass Queueing Networks: a Uniied Approach via Fluid Limit Models
It is now known that the usual traac condition (the nominal load being less than one at each station) is not suucient for stability for a multiclass open queueing network. Although there has been some progress in establishing the stability conditions for a multiclass network, there is no uniied approach to this problem. In this paper, we prove that a queueing network is positive Harris recurren...
متن کاملStability and optimization of queueing networks and their fluid models
We describe some approaches to the synthesis of optimal policies for multiclass queueing network models based upon the close connection between stability of queueing networks and their associated fluid limit models. It is found that there is also a close connection between optimization of the network and optimal control of the far simpler fluid network model. This observation leads to a new cla...
